VOC ship De Rooswijk
The ship was built for the VOC-Room Amsterdam of the trading company. On January 9, 1740 The Rooswijk sunk off the coast of England during a storm on the sand banks of Goodwin Sands, 8 km from Dover. The Rooswijk had left for a second tour from Texel, loaded with thirty boxes of bars of silver and silver coins, towards India. The captain during this fatal second tour was Daniel Ronzieres. The ship sank with the entire crew, there were no survivors. From the English coast canons hots were heard that suggested that there was a ship in distress. Some time after the sinking English fishermen found a box with letters which showed that it was indeed the Rooswijk that was wrecked.
