Legnano racing bicycle 1926 racing model, with Baruzzo wooden rims, Nervor brakes, Cravotto hubs, Italia saddle.
Preserved bicycle, in some places you can still see the blue colour, typical of the Legnano bikes of those years.
In Legnano in 1907 the Wolsit Officine Legnanesi Automobili was founded for the manufacture of cars and the like. The council includes, among others, Franco Tosi (founder of Franco Tosi Meccanica in 1881) and Siddeley from Wolsit (who in 1892 had crossed Great Britain in a trip with a bicycle that he had built himself). The Wolsit Officine Legnanesi Automobili (W. O. L. A.) has been building 25,000 bicycles since the first year: Italy is moving, the road network is expanding. His bicycles take part in numerous cycling tours and they are particularly solid, winning many of them. At that time, Emilio Bozzi had been selling car and bicycle equipment and accessories for years; since 1907 he has also been producing and selling 'La perla' bicycles. Subsequently he expands and opens branches in numerous cities in Northern Italy. He sells wheels, tyres, saddles, belts...
In 1915 Italy declares war to Austria; the war shakes markets. In 1912, Wolsit Legnano had also started to produce airplanes, but this proved to be a failure: on March 31, 1915 the company faced closure and on October 18, 1915 Emilio Bozzi bought it. In these years Bozzi also produces cars and trucks for the Italian army and bicycles for the 'bersaglieri'. In Bozzi's advertising pages already in 1915 the warrior appears, the sword to the sky in the right hand, the shield in the left hand, reproduction of the monument tribute to Alberto da Giussano built in Legnano in 1900. Emilio Bozzi appointed Eberardo Pavesi as sports director and Mario della Torre as his right-hand man. He was an experienced man who had made his company a second family, as Emilio Colombo, Director of the 'Gazzetta dello Sport' wrote. He died suddenly of heart attack, at 63, on September 12,1936, leaving two little daughters, Camilla 12 and Giuliana 10 years old. Mario della Torre, a family friend and right-hand man, took over the company. He made the entire golden period of Legnano with Brunero, Binda, Girardengo, Bartali, Coppi.
Coppi won the Giro d'Italia in 1940 and the day after Italy went to war. In the post-war period the Legnano layout changed: the two daughters of Bozzi got married and their husbands Lodovico Gnech and Silvio Marazza took care respectively of the financial/administrative and productive/commercial parts, at the beginning under the supervision of Mario della Torre, always with great harmony.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the difficulties of running a business had already increased considerably: in 1973, just over ten years after its inauguration, the factory in Legnano had to be closed. It was preferable to give up the direct production in order to start the so-called 'conto lavorazione'. Legnano bought different mechanical parts from suppliers and then assembled them. However, Legnano bicycles continued to be exported worldwide. With the serious oil crisis, the Italian bicycle market was suffering a severe setback. All this, combined with the death of Gnech first and Marazza then, forced the two families, with their children still very young to dismiss the brand, first to the Trapletti family and then to Riva.
